THE second part of our tribute to Yeovil’s fallen war heroes.
CAMPBELL, William John: Died on April 29, 1918, aged just 21, while serving as a Private with the 2nd/5th Battalion of the Gloucester Regiment.
CHANNING, Arthur William: Died on February 23, 1917, while serving as a Corporal with the Royal Marine Light Infantry of the 1st Royal Marine Battalion of the Royal Naval Division.
CHANT, Bertie Thomas: Died on July 1, 1916, aged just 21, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry.
His parents lived in Queen Street, Yeovil.
CHANT, Frederick Ernest: Served as a Private with the Hampshire Regiment and invalided out of active service in May 1918 as a result of the effects of gas poisoning. He later died at his home in Camborne Grove, Yeovil, as a result of the poisoning.
He left a wife and three children.
CHAPMAN, William James: Died on October 4, 1917, while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion of the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment. His parents lived in Huish, Yeovil.
CHISLETT, Jesse: Died on April 12, 1918, aged 30, while serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment in France. He was killed during heaving fighting on the Western Front. His parents lived at Camborne Street, Yeovil.
CHUDLEIGH, Jack Eustace: Died on September 19, 1916, aged just 19, while serving as a Private with the 1st/14th London Regiment the London Scottish in France. He was awarded the Military Medal and his parents lived in Grove Avenue, Yeovil.
CLEMENTS, Arthur James: Died on February 19, 1916, aged 29, while serving as a Private with the 6th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry in France.
COLLINS, Robert Rendell: Died on December 24, 1918, aged just 23, while serving as a Private with the 1st/4th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. He was buried in the Baghdad War Cemetery in Iraq and his parents lived at Wellington Street, Yeovil.
COOMBS, William Theodore: Died on August 30, 1918, aged 27, while serving as a Corporal with the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment in Flanders. His parents lived in Everton Road, Yeovil.
COOPER, George Henry: Died on November 19, 1916, aged 33, and his wife lived in Sparrow Road, Yeovil.
COUNTER, Walter Gill: Died on September 22, 1914, while serving as a Private with the Royal Marine Light Infantry on board HMS Aboukir which sank in the North Sea after being torpedoed. His parents lived in Clarence Place, Huish, Yeovil.
COX, Ernest George: Died on May 31, 1916, aged just 18, while serving as a Seaman with the Royal Navy during the Battle of Jutland on board HMS Black Prince. His family lived in Camborne Street, Yeovil.
CROUCH, James Henry: Died on May 31, 1918, aged 34, while serving as a Private with the Royal Marine Light Infantry of the 1st Royal Marine Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. His wife lived in Gladstone Terrace, St Michael’s Avenue, Yeovil.
CURTIS, Edward: Died on September 25, 1915, while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 6th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry in the trenches. His name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
DADE, Henry George: Died on August 31, 1916, aged just 23, while serving as a Corporal with the 1st/5th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. He died as a result of gas poisoning in India. His parents lived in Southville, Yeovil.
DAVEY, Reginald Frank: Died on September 5, 1918, while serving as a Driver with the 1st Division Ammunition Train Canadian Field Artillery. His parents lived Sherborne Road, Yeovil.
DAVEY, Thomas Charles: Died on May 8, 1915, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. His name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. His parents lived at Ivy Cottages, Union Street, Yeovil.
DAVIS, John: Died on September 3, 1914, while serving with the 1st Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment.
DEACON, Charles Mark: Died on August 29, 1918, while serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. His parents lived in Preston Road, Yeovil.
DENMEAD, Thomas John Ambrose (Jack): Died on April 19, 1917, aged just 20, while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd/4th Battalion of the Gloucester Regiment following an operation at a military hospital in Paisley. His parents lived in Newton Road, Yeovil.
DICKS, Harold: Died on August 16, 1917, aged 27, while serving as a Corporal with the 7th Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. His parents lived in Crofton Avenue, Yeovil.
DIMENT, Ernest Reginald: Died on May 31, 1916, aged just 29, while serving as a Petty Officer with HMS Indefatigable and was killed during the Battle of Jutland. His parents lived in Camborne Street, Yeovil.
DONOVAN, Albert George: Died on November 1, 1918, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. He received the Military Medal, while his parents lived in Quidham Place, Vicarage Street, Yeovil.
EARL, John Charles: Died on November 6, 1917, aged 32, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. His wife lived in North Terrace, Newtown, Yeovil.
EASON, Samuel Phillip: Died on November 2, 1914, aged 28, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. His name was not included on the Yeovil War Memorial until 1989. His mother had never accepted his death and refused to have his name inscribed on the memorial. But, many years later, family members got permission for his name to be finally added. His parents had lived at South Street, Yeovil.
EWENS, Lionel Richard: Died on October 26, 1917, while serving as a Sergeant with the 9th Company of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps in France. His remains were interred in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery. His parents lived at Kingston, Yeovil.
