Armistice Day: Lest We Forget Yeovil's fallen Part Four

THE fourth part of our dedication to Yeovil’s fallen war dead as we commemorate Armistice Day.

HAMMETT, Conrad: Died on April 15, 1918, while serving as a Sapper with the 77th Field Company of the Royal Engineers. He died in a hospital from his wounds sustained in France. His parents lived in Sparrow Road, Yeovil.

HANCOCK, John: Died on June 6, 1918, while serving as a Private with the 9th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers while in action in Cologne, Germany. His sister lived in The Park, Yeovil.

HANN, Albert Edward: Died on September 29, 1915, while serving as a Private with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. His sister, Miss E. Hann, lived at Victoria Buildings, Yeovil.

HARDEMENT, Frank: Died on October 10, 1918, aged 19, while serving as a Private with the 6th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment.

HARDY, Edwin: Died on September 20, 1914, while serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment on the Western Front. His parents lived in Victoria Road, Yeovil, while his wife lived in Castle Cary.

HARDY, Fred: Died on September 20, 1917, aged 19, while serving as a Rifleman with the 12th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. He was the son of the late Mr Sherring Hardy, of the Butcher’s Arms, Yeovil.

HARDY, Henry Charles: Died on February 19, 1917, aged 27, while serving as a Private with the 7th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. He was the second son that his parents, of Victoria Road, Yeovil, had lost during the Great War.

HARRISON, Frederick Walter: Died on February 28, 1917, aged just 23, while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. His mother, of Park Street, Yeovil, was informed that her son had died of wounds received in Mesopotamia.

HAWKER, Frederick: Died on July 10, 1915, aged 49, while serving as a Private with the 9th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. He lived with his wife in South Western Terrace, Yeovil, and had six children.

HAWKER, Sidney George: Died on August 22, 1917, while serving as a Private with the 6th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. His wife lived in South Street, Yeovil.

HAWKINS, Edwin: Died on December 3, 1915, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. His parents lived in Vincent Street, Yeovil.

HAYWARD, Bertie John: Died while serving as a Private with the Somerset Light Infantry.

HAYWARD, S. E: Died on April 10, 1915, aged 23, while serving as a Driver with the 15th Battalion of the Royal Field Artillery. His mother lived in Huish, Yeovil.

HEARD, Horace Cyril Casley: Died on October 6, 1915, while serving as a Private with the 7th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders. His father lived in Brunswick Street, Yeovil.

HELYAR, Albert: Died on July 1, 1916, aged 30, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion with the Somerset Light Infantry. His parents lived in Great Western Terrace, Yeovil.

HENWOOD, Eli: Died on April 9, 1917, aged 21, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. His parents lived in Lyde Road, Yeovil.

HENWOOD, S. H: Died on July 20, 1915, while serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards. He was killed while fighting in the trenches on the Front. His wife lived in Lyde Road, Yeovil.

HIGGINS, Brynford Eaton: Died on May 20, 1918, aged 24, while serving as a Private for the Motor Transport of the Army Service Corps in France.

HILBORNE, H: Died on November 24, 1916, while serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment as a prisoner of war. His remains were interred in Baghadad War Cemetery in Iraq. His sister lived in York Place, Kingston, Yeovil.

HILL, Arthur Theophilus: Died on November 14, 1916, while serving as a Private with the 8th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry in France. His parents lived in Reckleford Hill, Yeovil.

HOCKEY, Henry Albert Harry: Died on November 9, 1918, aged 24, while serving as a Private with the 32nd Battalion of the Machine Gun Corps. His parents Mr and Mrs Hockey, of Pen Field, Sherborne Road, Yeovil, were notified during the Armistice jubilations of November 11 that their son had been killed just two days previously. He was well-known in the Yeovil area and had only been married about five months. His widow was received by Mrs Hockey through a letter from the Major of her husband’s Company, who explained he had been instantly killed with several of his comrades by the explosion of a mine near Avensnes, a town which he had gallantly helped to capture, and was buried with several others in a field near the town. He had previously worked as a clerk by the Phoenix Engineering Company based in Chard.

HOLLAND, Edward: Died on September 16, 1916, aged 21, while serving as a Private with the 7th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry.

HOLLAND, Harry: Died on November 22, 1917, while serving as a Corporal with the 1st/5th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry in Palestine. His remains were interred in Jerusalem War Cemetery. His mother lived in Dampier Street, Yeovil.

HOLT, Percy Lionel: Died on November 13, 1917, while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 1st/5th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry in Palestine. His mother lived in Vicarage Street, Yeovil, and his remains were interred in the Jerusalem Memorial.

HOOPER, Frederick Thomas: Died on September 16, 1916, while serving as a Sergeant with the 43rd Company of the Machine Gun Corps.

HOOPER, Victor: Died on July 14, 1917, while serving as a Private with the 10th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment in Salonica. His wife lived at Percy Road, Yeovil.

HOSKINS, William Stanley: Died on August 18, 1916, aged just 22, while serving as a Private with the 6th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. His parents lived in Reckleford, Yeovil.

HUNT, Frederick Arthur: Died on August 16, 1917, aged 24, while serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion of the London Regiment. His mother lived in Orchard Street, Yeovil.

HUTCHINGS, Charles: Died on July 23, 1916, aged 21, while serving as a Private with the 2nd/5th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. His parents lived at Huish, Yeovil.

HYDE, William Thomas: Died on November 2, 1917, aged 31, while serving as a Private with the 1st/8th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment. He was killed in active service in Palestine and his remains were interred in the Gaza War Cemetery. He lived in Seaton Road, Yeovil, and was married with two children.

Our commemoration of Yeovil’s fallen war dead will continue throughout today – Armistice Day.
