FARMERS from across the South Somerset area are joining up to a new scheme being started to try and ensure they do not become the latest victims of crime.
The police are set to launch a new Farmwatch initiative on December 2 at Gartell’s Engineering in Yenston, near Wincanton, and it is hoped it will lead to a reduction in thefts from farms.
Sgt Ed Hawkins, who has been instrumental in the setting up of the scheme, said: “There is an overwhelming call for a Farm-watch scheme to be in place across the area.
“Anecdotal evidence from conversations with farmers demonstrates there is certainly an appetite for this and I have a desire to see this set up and succeed.”
But Sgt Hawkins said his aims for Farm-watch were for it to be useful for members and he has already been pleased with the support he has received.
Anyone wanting further information about Farmwatch can contact Sgt Hawkins on 0845-4567000.
