Yeovil Land Rover offers winter driving advice

WITH weather experts warning that 2010 could become one of the coldest UK winters in 100 years, Yeovil Land Rover at Houndstone is giving advice to all motorists on how to counter adverse driving conditions.

With continued snowfall and freezing temperatures Peter Kingwell, dealer principal at Yeovil Land Rover, said: “Whether you’re heading into work on hazardous roads or embarking on a trip to the slopes in Europe, the latest spell of weather has demonstrated the chaos that a British winter can cause.

“And to help cope more effectively on snowy and icy roads, we recommend that motorists take note of the following precautions to help avoid unnecessary accidents.”

· In poor conditions good visibility is vital. Keep screen wash topped up and ensure windscreen and windows are clean.

· Check front and rear lights are clean and working.

· Check the pressure and tread depth of your tyres (including the spare). The minimum legal UK tread depth is 1.6mm but it is widely accepted that performance is significantly affected once tread depth dips below 3mm.

· Recognise the increased danger of ice in sub zero temperatures. Allow greater braking distances at traffic lights, crossroads and junctions.

· Accelerate slowly on snowy roads to prevent the formation of ice under the tyres.

· Take extra care on bridges, forest paths and shaded areas due to the increased risk of frost.

· Carry some extra warm clothing in case you become stranded.

· Take hot drinks and some high energy snacks if undertaking a long journey.

· Let someone know your intended movements in case they need to raise the alarm.

· Make sure that your vehicle has sufficient fuel for your journey.

· Listen to traffic news and weather forecasts – avoid unnecessary travel.

· Ensure your vehicle is serviced regularly as winter places additional demands upon hoses, drive belts and batteries. Antifreeze levels should also be checked.
