Joel Garner's boot in history exhibition

A LAUGHING sailor, a cricket boot belonging to fast bowler Joel Garner and a mysterious hoax amulet are just some of the objects that have been selected by BBC Somerset and museums across the county to tell a history of Somerset and its place in the world.

Somerset County Council’s Museum Service helped to choose the first ten objects which will represent Somerset in the nationwide A History of the World project.

The History of the World project has been formed out of a unique partnership between the BBC, the British Museum and 350 museums and institutions across the country.

The list of 10 objects can be viewed on the BBC Somerset -click on the related link on this story.

Local people will now be invited to suggest their own objects that have a local or global appeal by uploading photographs to the BBC website.

Stephen Minnitt, Somerset County Council’s Head of Museums, said: “It has been quite a challenge to select just ten objects to represent Somerset.

"All the objects have an intriguing tale to tell and it really helps to bring history to life.

"The project is a great opportunity to give a different slant on the world’s history.”

Jess Rudkin, Editor at BBC Somerset, said: “This is history at its most exciting.

"To think that when many of these objects were made, they were quite unremarkable, purely practical things.

"Now they'll give us a fascinating picture of the people from right across the county who owned them, used them and created them, years ago.”

Cllr Christine Lawrence, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community, said: “Somerset County Council is pleased to have been involved in selecting objects to tell the history of Somerset.

"We hope residents will take the chance to view some of the Somerset objects that are on display at the moment.”
