GENEROUS people in Taunton dug deep to raise £4,275 to help people in Haiti.
Members of the Rotary Clubs of Taunton and Taunton Vale organised the last-minute public collection in the High Street between 9am and 4.30pm on Saturday, with many people stopping to donate money.
Members sheltered under a ten person emergency tent from a Shelter Box, which are sent out by a Rotary charity to disaster areas.
The box contains sleeping bags, blankets, cooking utensils and other items for survival.
The cash will be used to send Shelter Boxes to give people who have lost their homes somewhere to make a new start.
Rotary member Alan Reeve said: “Our heartfelt thanks go after the wonderful generosity of so many who stopped to donate money.
“Several of them said that they had already responded to national appeals on the web or elsewhere - we do indeed live in a very caring town.”
