DETERMINED Abigail Carpenter, 14, who goes to Haygrove School in Bridgwater, won a Winner’s certificate at the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards for her all round achievement.

She was nominated by staff at Bridgwater-based Somerset Young Carers Project, who described her as a girl who ‘has had to grow up very quickly’.

She looks after her sister, who is on the higher level autistic spectrum, and has persevered through her own hyper mobility problems that cause her pain – continuing to attend school when, at one stage, treatment left her with both legs in plaster.

She is an advocate for the Somerset Young Carers Project and has spoken to Government inspectors about green issues and protecting the environment.

Her nomination read: “She is a determined young lady who is committed to protecting and supporting the world in which she lives. With her positive, enthusiastic and driving attitude, she has been a true inspiration to other young people in Somerset.”
