YEOVIL Music Centre is holding an exciting free musical event on Saturday, March 20, at Preston Community School.
The event – being held between 10am and 3pm – will be an opportunity for instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages to take part in musical workshops and ensembles; to work with renowned musicians; music centre tutors and perform in a free concert which will be recorded by members of the music department of Yeovil College.
Music director of Bath, Jason Thornton, will be introducing musicians to three guest celebrities – choral conductor James Davey, violinist Ruth Palmer and clarinetist Claire King.
James is a distinguished choral conductor and his choir Chantage was BBC3 Choir of the Year 2006. He is choir trainer for the Royal College of Music Junior Department and also assistant conductor for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.
Violinist Ruth brings glamour and engagement to the concert stage. Her debut recording was classic FM magazine’s January 2007 CD of the month. She was awarded Young British Classical Performer 2007 at the Classical BRITs.
Claire is a freelance clarinetist, teacher and animateur in the South West. She is currently a regular member of Bath Philharmonia, clarinetist with the Mistral wind quintet and plays bass clarinet with Liquorice Stix Quartet.
She has helped to run music workshops in schools, with the elderly and with children and adults with special needs.
This free musical event is being funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme, which has awarded the Yeovil Music Centre a grant of £8,122 to support music making in the Yeovil area.
The Big Lottery Fund distributes half of the National Lottery good cause funding across the UK. The fund is committed to bringing real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need.
Chairman of the Yeovil Music Centre Committee, Gail Beaver, said: “We are honoured to be working with such renowned musicians and without the invaluable assistance of Jason Thornton; grants from the Big Lottery Fund and Yeovil Town Council for this event, as well as funding and support from Somerset County Council and South Somerset District Council, we would not be where we are today. This is a very exciting day for us.”
Children, young people and adults, instrumentalists and vocalists come along and have fun working with these professional musicians and see for yourself what the Yeovil Music Centre is all about!
