Haiti fundraiser at Elim Church

SIX bands from across the region will be in Yeovil on Sunday (March 14) to raise money for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Christian groups including BOSH, Brother John and Haydon Spenceley will gather at Yeovil’s Elim Pentecostal Church on Sunday for a night of live music.

The event is being organised by Tom Maynard, who has recently started working as the Yeovil church’s music director.

He’s persuaded all six bands to play for free so that the proceeds from the £5 tickets will go to the appeal. Their contributions will join the millions of pounds already donated by people from across the UK after the quake in January.

Among the bands is ‘Brought into Being’, which Tom describes as a ‘cross between an 80s metal band and McFly’ and Four in the Fire which are claimed to be ‘an alternative rock band with a Jesus and violin twist!’ Finishing off the lineup is Tom Whitman, who Tom compares to David Gray and Bob Dylan.

Tom said: “It might only be a small gesture but we wanted to do something to show our support for victims of the quake.

“The thought of Christian rock might make some people wince but we guarantee there’s something of real quality for everyone in these acts.

“From bluegrass to alternative rock, they are some of the best known and most talented on the Christian circuit. More importantly though, it’s for a completely worthwhile cause.

“Getting the bands to play for free was a real bonus and means we can hopefully raise a good amount of money for people in Haiti.”
