CHANGES in gambling regulations being brought in by the Government have forced council officials in West Somerset to come up with the first draft licensing policy for the district.
The Gambling Act 2005, which comes into force next year, makes local authorities responsible for licensing bookmakers, casinos, amusement arcades and bingo halls, as well as issuing other gambling permits.
Cllr Mary Crowley, responsible for health and welfare for West Somerset Council, said: "Our objectives are to prevent gambling from being a source of crime and disorder, to ensure gambling is conducted in a fair and open way, and to protect children and other vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited.
The council has called on local people and organisations to comment on the new policy by October 3.
