THE future of the Charity Commission in Taunton is safe – for the moment at least.
There had been fears this summer that the outlet, which employs 135 staff, could be targeted as part of the Government’s cuts.
It is one of four Charity Commission premises in the country – the others are in London, Liverpool and Newport.
After the spending review announcement, a Charity Commission spokesman said: “We’re tied into our current accommodation arrangements as we cannot exit leases early without incurring penalties equivalent to the remaining rental due for the life of the lease – so no immediate saving would be generated.
“In addition, the Treasury won’t make any additional funding available to support accommodation changes.
“So, for the time being we’ll be maintaining our four sites, but clearly will consider our location and structure as part of the strategic review that we’re to begin in the next few days.”
Bosses have looked into the various office costs and Taunton is cheaper than those in Liverpool and London and also has a longer lease.
