PLANS to build a new housing development in Taunton are progressing after construction boards were placed around the proposed site.

Knightstone Housing Association plans to demolish 30 Taunton Deane Council-run properties on two parts of land in Victoria Gate, near East Reach, and build 64 new properties - including 17 dwellings and 47 flats.

The first phase of work to build 21 flats, which is expected to last 12 months, will start in October after the council transfers the land to the housing association next month.

Last year, the County Gazette reported how elderly people living in the development were offered support with the moving process after admitting they were left confused and fearing for their health after the plans were submitted.

Wendy Lewis, regional development manager for the association, this week confirmed the fencing was put up around part of the site as preparations for construction work begin.

She said: “The transfer of the land from Taunton Deane Council to us should be in place next month.

“We're going to hold an information afternoon for residents in late September. This will give them the chance to view plans, express an interest in a new home and talk to us about the project.

“As soon as the date has been confirmed, we'll send the residents a letter.”

The new homes will range from two-bedroom units to five-bedroom houses and the site is expected to feature car parking, bin and cycle storage.
