SOMERSET Skills & Learning are providing great news for anyone who suffers from migraines with a new yoga course designed to equip people with strategies to help address the causes of migraines.

Modern medicine is often designed to elevate the symptoms of migraines, but not address the root cause of the problem.

One of the theories of why migraines occur states that the blood vessels that supply the brain temporarily become narrow due to a variety of factors - stress and muscular tension among them.

Yoga can assist in the treatment or prevention of a migraine.

Starting on September 20, the 12-week course will introduce therapeutic yoga practices aimed at alleviating and preventing migraine while exploring aspects of posture, breath and relaxation techniques, including meditation.

By the end of the course learners will have an understanding and practise relaxation techniques for the control and relief of migraine.

Course tutor Shelagh Gotto said: “There has been good quality research which provides evidence that yoga therapy can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks, and can also reduce the anxiety and depression commonly associated with migraine.

“This course is suitable for migraine sufferers, both beginners and learners who may have some previous experience of yoga.

“Yoga is intrinsically a personal practice and the class will accommodate individual requirements so that everyone can participate.”
