Chard primary school continues improvement following OFSTED report

MANOR Court Primary School in Chard has received a notice to improve after an OFSTED report published last week.

The judgment related to the overall achievement of pupils in key stage two, particularly with standards reached in English and maths by the time they leave at the end of year six.

However, the school has highlighted that the improved quality of teaching has ensured that progress is broadly in line with national averages and further plans are in place to ensure future development.

The report rated the overall effectiveness of the school and the achievement of pupils as inadequate, while stating that the quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management were satisfactory.

In the last OFSTED report published in March, 2009, Manor Court saw all five areas graded as satisfactory.

Significant praise was reserved in a December report from OFSTED for the early years centre on site, which noted that “children flourish in a rich and inviting learning environment where individuality is valued.”

Head teacher Sarah Wellman said: “Though we still have a lot of work to do I’m thrilled that the children and staff of Manor Court have been praised for their hard work and commitment.

“The vast improvements already recognised by OFSTED will continue.

“Thankyou to governors, parents and carers – you’ve been a great support, ensuring that this school’s now a happy and safe community ready to steam ahead.”

In the school’s response to the report it was noted that governors recognised the improvement in the school, and praised the work the head and staff were doing to provide pupils with a safe and happy environment in which to grow and learn.
