Whitestaunton church work continues

WORK to make a church in Whitestaunton accessible for the whole community is continuing this month.

Church wardens Heather Hodges and Robert Kemp have been thanking everyone who has gone the extra mile to finish the Access for All project at St Andrews Church, while seeking helpers to complete a new glassworks project.

The glassworks project has been boosted by news that a grant for £3,000 has been received from Somerset Churches and Chapels - as an effort is made to ensure windows on site last for a further century.

Mr Kemp said: “Together with donations from the Allchurches Trust, The Alan Evans Memorial Trust, anonymous benefactors and our own funds we have generated sufficient funds to renovate all six south side windows.”

The church is now looking for six family donations or legacies in memory of a loved one to allow the north side of the church to be completed.

Somerset County Highways has given 100 tonnes of road planings to surface a new car park area.

Mr Kemp added: “This was a very generous gift on behalf of the whole community - and thank you. Now our farmers are scratching their heads to load it all up and relay it on the site of The Old Manor Rooms, which has been kindly loaned by Sylvie and Stuart Moore for the use of the church and the community.”

The church has thanked everyone who made the project possible - County Roads South Somerset, Neil McWilliams, young farmer and engineer Craig Edwards, Yeovil Hire Company Chard customer services for sponsoring the digging equipment, estate manager Andrew Haslock, Ray King for rebuilding steps and paths, and Mike Bartlett for site electrics, with cabling kindly given by farmer Jonah Mason.
