‘IT’s never too late to get fit’ was the message to 25 people who took part in a special day to teach them how to keep their hearts in tip top condition.

Held at the Yarlington Extra Care scheme in Bowhayes Lodge, Crewkerne, and joined by residents from nearby Muchelney House, in Ilminster, the staff put on special activities including a Flexercise session and a game of skittles, which was won by Winifred Webber, from Bowhayes.

A healthy lunch was part of the programme, as well as a tasting session of caffeine-free tea and coffee.

A competition held to identify unusual fruits was won by 89-year-old Nancy Savage, who moved in to Bowhayes only four weeks ago, who correctly named every one, and won herself some very healthy dark chocolate.

The day concluded with a raffle raising over £60 for the British Heart Foundation and a heart-warming supper of home-made lentil and gammon soup with heart-shaped croutons and an exotic fruit salad and Greek yogurt.

Extra care team leader, Erin Skeels, said: “The response from the residents was very positive, with many asking when the next one will be.”

Yarlington Housing Group operates ten extra care and 40 retirement living schemes across South Somerset.
