AVON and Somerset Police have been using high-tech CCTV bodycams to help gain convictions against criminals and cut the cost of investigating and trying cases through the courts.

The force was one of the first in the UK to use the £500 cameras, which are given to officers in hot-spot areas and enables them to gather evidence that can be used in court.

They also help cut the number of assaults against police officers by getting them to wear them at times when they are more likely to be attacked, such as when they are policing the night-time economy and during football matches.

A police spokesman said: “The bodycams have already helped us to gain convictions against numerous criminals in court.

“Offenders are far more likely to plead guilty if they know that they have been captured on CCTV, saving the time and expense of taking cases to court.”
