A MOTHER inspired to become a volunteer in the wake of her son’s death is appealing to people to ‘get their voice heard’.

Brenda Prentice, of Taunton, is urging others to join Healthwatch Somerset, which champions the interests of people using health and social care services.

Mrs Prentice, who won the Unpaid Carers Award at the Great British Carers Awards 2013, said: “I originally got involved because I wanted to influence things.

“My son Andrew died aged just 38 and I’ve been in discussions with the NHS and the Ombudsman about the care he received for a long time.

“It’s easy to get frustrated and give up, but when I learnt about Healthwatch I thought this might be a good way to influence things.

“An individual’s voice can sometimes get lost, but when we’re part of a bigger movement, we can make sure we’re heard. Together we can make a difference.”

She added: “I want voices to be heard and I want changes, where necessary, to be made.

“Healthwatch is unique in that it has a powerful voice at the top table – we need to hear people’s stories, good and not so good.”

Healthwatch Somerset manager Morgan Daly said Mrs Prentice, who set up Somerset Community Care Matters to help and support others, uses her experiences and knowledge to benefit health and social care service users.

He added: “There are a number of ways local people can get involved as volunteers.”
