FARMERS across Somerset and beyond mounted another picket of the Morrisons’ depot at Bridgwater this week and it has resulted in more talks with the supermarket.

The demo on Monday night blockaded the vast distribution site near the M5 with tractors and vehicles clogging the roads outside.

James Holt from Wedmore said: “There were 30 or so tractors there and we blockaded the road outside until nearly 2am. It is in protest over Morrisons not agreeing to paying the same price for milk going as a liquid and for milk going to cheese production. It costs the same amount of money for a farmer to produce milk for cheese as it does for liquid milk. Cheese production uses a third of all milk produced.”

He said Morrisons rebuffed the farmers plan to pay the same for all milk. This has led to an impasse and the latest demonstration and blockade. The supermarket said they would hold more talks with Farmers for Action this week in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Mr Holt said: “Farmers need to be given a fair crack of the whip when it comes to milk production. Morrisons say they needed to speak to their cheese supplier and would hold more talks this week so we’ll see where it goes.”

Last week Morrisons said in a statement: “We are disappointed with the disruption being caused to our stores and our customers. We recognise that the current issue is being caused by a reduction in global demand for milk that has led to an oversupply in the UK and very difficult conditions for many dairy farmers. We want to reiterate that we are not seeking any further reductions in milk prices and we will continue our talks with the NFU, in a constructive manner, to finalise our agreed plan of action.”
