SOMERSET County Council’s public engagement roadshow is heading for five more towns in September.

During the next few days, the Listening Learning Changing events will be in Bridgwater (Friday, September 4), Wellington (Saturday, 5), Wiveliscombe (Sunday, 6), Yeovil (Friday, 11) and Frome (Saturday, 12), asking people for their views on the council’s priorities and other key issues.

Anyone attending the events can try their hand at balancing the authority's budget on a giant set of scales, show their priorities by placing coins in ‘Think Tanks’ and complete a short questionnaire.

The survey is also available on-line for those who cannot get along to an event but still want to get involved.

More than 2,000 people attended events in July and August, sharing views as the council faces up to the challenge of reduced funding and increasing demand for services.

County Hall's income from central government is due to fall by more than £40million by 2019/2020 at the latest and the authority estimates it needs to save in the region of £30million from its budget this year.

“These are the last five events and I’m hoping that plenty more people will take the time to come along and speak to us,” said Cllr John Osman, leader of Somerset County Council.

“We’ve done our best to get out to locations across the county to give people an opportunity to tell us what they think.

“The growing demand for our services and falling income from government mean we are in a very challenging financial position.

"We are going to have to make difficult decisions to balance our budget and want to hear people’s views so, where possible, we can take them into account when making those decisions.”

By the end of September the roadshows will have visited 15 locations across the county.

Representatives from the cCouncil will be on hand to answer questions and fun activities will be available to keep children entertained.
