Firefighters from five Somerset towns were called to a huge fire that gutted the George Hotel in Nether Stowey last night. Watch the video here.

One appliance from Nether Stowey and two from Bridgwater were sent to the report of a roof on fire in the pub in St Marys Street.

The crew from Nether Stowey confirmed that the building was "well alight" and requested a further three fire appliances.

Firefighters from Bridgwater, Williton and Taunton were sent on along with the incident command unit from Wivesliscombe.

By 5.48pm the roof of the pub consisting of two storeys and measuring approximately 20 metres x 10 metres, was on fire.

Crews worked to stop fire spread to the adjoining properties and shortly before 6pm an aerial ladder platform was requested and sent on from Bridgwater Fire Station.

A second aerial ladder platform was sent from Taunton shortly afterwards.

By 7pm crews were at work using three main jets, two hose reel jets, a compressed air foam jet and aerial ladder platform to supress the fire.

Crews managed to get the fire within the roof space of building surrounded just before 8pm with two aerial ladder platform monitors in use backed up from two street hydrants and open water supply.

Half the property was damaged by fire and 60 per cent was damaged by smoke and water.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
