PEOPLE across Somerset are being urged to stand up and let the rest of the world know what a wonderful county we live in.

The second Somerset Day being organised for Wednesday, May 11, aims to make us proud of where we live and to attract more interest from outside.

Children from every school in the county are being encouraged to lead the way by taking part in a competition themed My Somerset - they can draw a picture, write a poem, take a photo or write a short story, with Amazon vouchers up for prizes in various age groups.

Nigel Muers-Raby, chairman of Passion Somerset, said organisers are writing to all parish councils to stir up support and lay on events on the day, which is being sponsored by Wyke Farms and Thatcher's Cider.

"We want to encourage individuals, organisations, communities and businesses to be proud of Somerset," said Mr Muers-Raby, "The object is to generate more interest in our county.

"Devon is extremely good at promoting itself as a wonderful place to work and live.

"Somerset is an incredible county - it's got amazing countryside, a vibrant community with fantastic businesses and organisations.

"But somehow it has lost its ability to say to people, 'Actually, don't just pass by on the motorway on your way to Devon'.

"It's very much about everyone coming together to really grow awareness."

Mr Muers-Raby said last year's inaugural Somerset Day, in honour of King Alfred, was a "huge success" and early signs suggest this year will be even bigger and better.

"I think this will be take-off year, when it really gets going," he said.

"It's an opportunity to make something really special here. It's time for us to be proud of what we have and what we are."

Somerset Day will be celebrated by the Visit Somerset group, which aims to boost the tourist industry in the county, with leaders organising a launch at the House of Commons to plug everything we have to offer.

And Mr Muers-Raby said individuals and organisations will be encouraged to mark Somerset Day into the weekend after May 11, when some people may not be able to celebrate properly as it is a working day.
