THE Lord Lieutenant of Somerset is setting off on a Tramper trek challenge to mark the 60th anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Annie Maw will be going on a 60 mile journey across the county in her Tramper - an electric vehicle for people who are unable to walk.

She sets off on her challenge today, (July 18) and is expected to finish on Saturday, (July 23).

There will be a 15 mile route in each of the four corners of the historical county.

The journey will begin at Wellow, in BANES and finish at Glastonbury Abbey.

On the way Mrs Maw will visit Radstock and the outskirts of Frome, the sea front in Weston-super-Mare, Cheddar, Porlock Post and Dunkery Beacon on Exmoor, Dunster, the West Somerset Railway and Minehead, Bruton and Ditcheat.

Mrs Maw said: “Somerset is full of energetic people who spend time and effort on all kinds of activities and ideas whose objective is to improve and preserve the special way of life we have in this, the most unique, varied and spectacular of counties.

"My intention is to show the world what a brave and beautiful county we live in.

"We would like to raise people's awareness of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and of the Lieutenancy's role in promoting projects like this which was founded by a member of the Royal family.

"We are proud to be supporting them and to be promoting Somerset, our county.”
