WEATHER forecasters are predicting that Somerset will be battered by strong winds this evening (Tuesday) into tomorrow morning.

The MetOffice is warning that Storm Aileen will bring gusts of between 50 and 60mph from 8pm today, easing off into the morning.

Rain, that will be heavy at times, is also forecast.

The MetOffice has issued a yellow - be aware - warning for the South West.

Western Power Distrubution has additional operational and engineering staff on standby to respond to any network issues.

Extra control and contact centre operatives will be available to manage the electricity network, while helicopters will be available to fly and identify badly affected areas to speed up repairs.

The company has rescheduled non-essential work to maximise staff available for storm repairs.

Flooding teams and emergency response vehicles are on stand-by.

A WPD spokesman said: "We are continually monitoring this forecast and will provide regular progress updates if our customers and network are significantly impacted."
