Recycling your batteries just got easier

PEOPLE in Somerset should find it easier to recycle household batteries, according to waste bosses in the county.

Somerset Waste Partnership says that from February 1, under the new EU Batteries Directive, any retailer that sells more than 32kg of household batteries per year, or around 320 packs of AA batteries, will provide a collection or “take-back” point. That will include supermarkets and many larger shops and newsagents. Steve Read, managing director of Somerset Waste Partnership, said: “In the UK we only recycle around 3% of all household batteries sold.

“That means millions of batteries every year are disposed of with domestic refuse and buried in landfill sites. Batteries contain toxic and hazardous materials that can leak into the environment as they degrade, if not disposed of carefully. This new scheme is a welcome step forward in tackling the problem.”

Why can't they just collect them in our green boxes? They collect car batteries but not household batteries. They would be so easy to collect. Come on Somerset waste Partnership, pull your finger out!

Quite agree!

How many batteries does the average household chuck out each week?
Not that many.
So, if the recycle lorry collected them on its rounds, it's hardly likely that their vehicle would be overloaded with the things. A small bucketful perhaps per round per week.

Oh no! Would that mean we'd all be given little containers into which to seperate our batteries - as well?
I'm losing count of how many recycle bins I have!

try rechargeable batteries; they're cheaper to use and don't need recycling!

Agreed souwesterly but having just received the annual bill for my garden waste bin, only to discover it has increased to £42.50 (yes, you read that right), I dread to think how much they'd add on for collecting batteries!

Enough's enough and TDBC can shove their green bin where the sun don't shine. Gonna let my grass grow and get some sheep instead I reckon!
