YOUNG stars in South Somerset and their supporters were celebrated at a sparkling awards ceremony at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil.

The annual Gold Star Awards are hosted by South Somerset District Council and awards were up for grabs for youngsters aged up to 18, and the volunteers who work with them, in nine categories.

Steve Barnes, young people’s officer at the district council, said: “The Gold Star Awards shows just how many incredible individuals and groups there are making a huge difference in their communities.

“Although we were only able to hand out ten awards, everyone receiving a nomination deserves to be recognised.”

Among the recipients was Chard School pupil Sam Dunning, who won the Young Achiever Award. He impressed judges with his entrepreneurial skills after setting up two poultry businesses. Sam is no stranger to success having plucked numerous awards at the National Poultry Awards last year.

Avishayes Combe Youth FC from Combe St Nicholas enjoyed sporting success as joint winner of the Junior Club of the Year Award as did Yeovil-based Somerset ACF Tug of War Group.

Talented youngsters from Acrofusion Castaways Theatre Group, Orchard Gymnastics and Violet Weekend treated guests to performances. P

ortfolio holder for leisure and culture Cllr Sylvia Seal said: “Through training and financial support South Somerset District Council is committed to supporting young people year round and this awards ceremony is our reward for so many local heroes.

“Without these dedicated volunteers, coaches and young people many of the rural villages would not have the clubs, facilities and activities that are the lifeblood of their communities.

“This event is about giving something back to these people as well as sharing some remarkably inspirational stories."
