Members of the Elfin Committee have hit back at the trustees of Wayford Woods after it was announced that fairy doors will be removed from the woodland near Crewkerne.

It was claimed that things were getting out of control with as many as ten fairy doors on one tree.

However, the Fairy Folk have responded to the trustees urging them not to pull down the doors and have issued a plea in the form of a poem.

"It is IMPortant for Fairy Folk of the aforementioned woodland to air their views and to clarify the situation. The Elfin Committee has no objection to their woodland being used as a leisure facility, what we do oppose is that doorways to our homes (through which human beings cannot see inside) could be removed leaving us to the mercy of the English weather.

Although it is unconventional - if not unheard of - for Fairy Folk to seek publicity, our little society is outraged by the heartless way we are to be treated and so we speak up against the Gremlins who want to rob us of our abodes.

We are the folk of field and trees
Living in a world of make-believe
Eviction is what we now face
From the Gremlins of the human race
Flowers and coppices are our domain
And a fairground rejected made us complain
Though large in number but small in stature
Magic could make our status greater
Leave the fairy doors to grace our homes
Also glitter and adornment we love to behold
But Trustees please don’t take us to task
Because perchance a fairground was too much to ask!"
