FARMS across the South Somerset area have been joining in with the Open Farm Sunday event – aimed at building awareness among people as to what happens “down on the farm”.

ABP UK and The Co-operative Food joined forces at the weekend at Meadowlea Farm near South Petherton to celebrate farming and local produce with the intention of educating the community about the work farmers are doing to produce food and manage the countryside.

The event was one of over 1,000 events LEAF, a charity dedicated to supporting sustainable food and farming, organised in partnership with farmers across the UK and the companies they work with.

Throughout the day, Meadowlea Farm opened its gates for the community to take part in talks on sustainability, local produce and farm machinery.

Will Jackson, at The Co-operative Food, said: “The Open Farm Sunday event was a great opportunity for us to support LEAF in reaching out to the community and let them know all about the fantastic work that goes into their local farms and produce.

“It was great to see so many people from the community engaged with what we were doing and eager to find out more. There is some really good local produce coming out of Somerset at the moment, so it was great to be able to highlight this.”

Other farms to take part in the Open Farm scheme were the Frogmary Green Farm and the Rushywood Farm
