MORE than 140 children took over the Avon and Somerset Police yesterday as part of Children's Commissioner's Takeover Day.

It is the first time the force has taken part in the event, joining Warwickshire, Norfolk, West Mercia, Lincolnshire and the Metropolitan police.

Speaking before the event, Superintendent Simon Ellis, Head of Local Policing at Avon and Somerset police said: “I am confident that the Takeover Day will open our eyes and help us see problems from a different, young people’s perspective.

"It is also an opportunity for young people to find out about the world of work, what goes on behind the scenes in the police and the difficult decisions we make every day.

"We are really keen to young people’s views on policing and how we can work together.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “It is important to me that I make sure I am speaking and listening to young people from across Avon and Somerset about the issues which matter to them in relation to policing and crime.

“My team have a full agenda of activities planned including meeting with Amy, my Youth Champion, a practical session with Young Victims’ Service and a session on Restorative Justice with Helen, our RJ Development Manager.

“As well as providing an insight into my role and the work of my team, I hope that the young people will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and develop their ideas to ensure their views are truly reflected in the work we do.”

In 2014 more than 44,000 children and young people took part in the Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day with more than 1,100 organisations involved.
