STAFF at a South Somerset creamery are celebrating after winning big at the International Cheese Awards.

The Lubborn Creamery in Cricket St Thomas, part of the Lactalis Group, was crowned the UK reserve champion trophy and best goat’s milk cheese at the awards ceremony Nantwich.

David Gray, the factory manager, said: "This is an outstanding achievement for a small local cheese maker and shows that the creamery produces world beating soft cheeses in its range of Somerset Brie, Somerset Camembert and Capricorn Goat’s milk cheese. We are all very proud to receive this amount of recognition.

"The Lubborn Creamery supplies a wide range of customers in the UK including retailers large and small. It works closely with many of these customers to develop and produce great cheese made in Somerset and loved by consumers all over the country."

The judging for the event was held on July 25 with the showcase taking place the next day.

Lubborn Creamery was among 5,000 entries into the awards, with 47 per cent of those coming from overseas.

The company, which produces Capricorn Somerset goat's cheeses, have added the two gold awards to their already huge haul of awards, which now includes 26 first place and gold awards, 22 second place and silver, 23 third place or bronze awards, and four very highly recommended awards.
