THE final public exhibition on plans to dual the whole of the A358 between Taunton and Ilminster has been delayed.

People would have been able to have their say about the plans - which are hoped to start in 2020 - at a public exhibition on May 8.

It was due to take place at the Holiday Inn in Taunton but today, Highways England sent out a Tweet saying it had been postponed.

The organisation said it has been delayed until after the General Election on June 8, and a new date will be given after then.

The new dual carriageway road would veer off the A358 at West Hatch and run through the countryside to Shoreditch - according to current propsals.

Highways England has also unveiled a new M5 junction (Junction A) at Killams Avenue and further junctions on the A358 at West Hatch and near Ashill.

And the existing carriageway from West Hatch Lane to Southfields Roundabout at Ilminster would be widened as part of the scheme.

There could also be "new bridges or underpasses at locations to be determined to ensure good connectivity is retained across the dual carriageway for motorists, cyclists, equestrians and pedestrians".

The plans are hoped to reduce traffic and congestion, while bringing economic benefits to Somerset.

Stoke St Mary Parish Council chairman Michael Baddeley recently wrote to Highways England complaining that no presentations have so far been made in the village.

He also called for an extension to the consultation period, which he claims has been cut short because of the upcoming county council and general elections.
