THE Liberal Democrats have launched their campaign for the General Election in South Somerset.

Last thursday the party unveiled Jo Roundell Greene as their prospective parliamentary candidate, and on Saturday she addressed a crowd at East Coker Village Hall.

Mrs Roundell Greene said: “I fully support an extra penny on income tax to pay for our crumbling NHS, we must support it, we must fight for it.

"We know that there are going to be huge cuts to our schools because of the spending freeze. Preston School here in Yeovil will have the equivalent of £180,000 cut from its budget by 2019, this is equivalent to 6 teachers. Our children don’t deserve this.

"I will fight like mad to protect our aerospace industry. We’ve seen the jobs at GKN go, and we know there are huge uncertainties at Leonardo - these things have been neglected by our MP.

"Our MP has done absolutely nothing to support our towns, our villages and our people.

"We are going to start today. We’re going to be the people out there on the doorsteps, we are Liberal Democrats and we are proud of it. Lets go out there and win this election."

The Liberal Democrats returned six seats in South Somerset in last week's county council elections.

Speaking on Friday, Paddy Ashdown, chairman of Yeovil Liberal Democrats, said: “I would like to thank our many brave and determined candidates, and their teams.

"Yesterday shows that our support in South Somerset is strong, and that the Liberal Democrats are the only option other than the Tories.

"Our local campaigners were particularly struck by the number of people who told us on the door-step that South Somerset deserved better when it comes to our representation in Parliament and only the Lib Dems can provide this.

"Our candidates will work tirelessly at Somerset County Council to represent their constituents and their interests."
