VULNERABLE and ill children in Somerset need the support of Chard and Ilminster’s businesses.

That is the message coming from two Chard residents, Andrew Tolley and Penny Lester, who have set up a massive fundraising event and need the backing of local companies.

The pair have organised a black tie do to take place at Hornsbury Mill on Saturday, February 17, starting at 6pm.

Now they are looking for businesses based in the two towns to come forward and sponsor a table, buy tickets, or donate a prize for the grand raffle.

Andrew said: “Because it is a local event for Chard and Ilminster, we wanted to approach local businesses first for them to be given the chance to represent their company.

“If somebody does come to represent the company then they will be mentioned on the night and given a certificate from Children’s Hospice South West, and might get into the Chard and Ilminster News.

“It is £35 for a ticket and then we are hoping more people might want to throw in a couple of quid each for the raffle.”

Penny was first inspired to raise money for Children hospice South West after it was chosen as a charity of the week at her work.

She said: “I went along and I was overwhelmed.

“It was a fantastic experience. The hospice just totally stole my heart . As soon as you walk through the door it is the most happy, loving, caring place I have ever seen.

“I then did a skydive for them about two years ago and raised about £5,000.”

The event will feature a pre-dinner drinks and a three course meal. There will then be a talk from author Kirsty Bilski, who was inspired to write a book about the care her daughter received from the hospice.

She will be followed by area co-ordinator for Children’s Hospice South West, Naomi Dymond.

Andrew added: “As well as raising money, we are hoping to have a happy and a sad element to it.

“We want to have fun and we are raising money for a great cause which is the happy part, but then I think it is also going to be a very touching night.

“Thank you to the Hornsbury Mill who are donating the venue for the night. They have also given a night for two people in the bridal suite.

“We just need to fill the place now. It is going to be formal, with a black tie dress, but also informal and very friendly.”
