A MAN died in a house fire in Vale Street, Henstridge, in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters rushed to the property after the alarm was raised at 1.28am.

A total of eight fire engines and a water carrier attended the blaze.

The man was rescued from the first floor of the building and taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the fire started in the garage and that no smoke detectors were fitted.

Two fire crews remained behind after the blaze was put out to damp down hot spots.

A fire safety leaflet distribution will take place in the area today.
