South West Internet shortlisted for top award for broadband work

A TOP wireless internet provider has made the finals of the prestigious UK internet industry awards for connecting remote Somerset businesses.

South West Internet has been shortlisted for the Corporate Social Responsibility Award in London on July 9 because of its work in supplying broadband to rural companies.

Rupert Cox, interim CEO of inward investment body Into Somerset, says, “South West Internet provides rural business in Somerset with low-cost broadband, plus free access for community groups, so the award would be well-deserved.

“Some businesses can obtain faster broadband speeds through Somerset’s wireless internet network than those in London. It’s no wonder that Somerset has one of the UK’s highest broadband take-up rates and the best in the West.”

South West Internet’s managing director, Tim Snape, said: “We are proud and excited to reach the finals, as the award is for the company whose policies have had the most positive effect on society.”

South West Internet is competing against industry giants Orange UK, Sky Broadband, registration body Nominet and hosting provider UKFast.Net in the UK Internet Services Providers’ Association awards ceremony at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel.

Into Somerset promotes Somerset as the place where businesses can grow by taking advantage of its excellent communications network and a host of other commercial and lifestyle benefits.

South West Internet is a Community Interest Company, which was established with backing from Somerset County Council, West Somerset District Council and others. A CIC is similar to a Public Limited Company, but the assets belong to the community and South West Internet’s profits are invested back into growing the network.

Helped by its excellent communications network, Somerset has the highest business start-up rates outside London. It is at the heart of the WestCountry and is less than two hours from London, the Midlands and a choice of regional international airports.

More than 20,000 people relocate to Somerset each year – most from London and the South East – and enjoy its countryside, coast and clean air, friendly market towns, short commute times and first-class educational opportunities.

Into Somerset is funded by the local authorities and chaired by Honor Chapman CBE, the first CEO of Think London, the project brings together the public and private sector to promote Somerset as a thriving business destination.
