THE largest ever South Somerset walking festival is set to take place with events across the county.
Running for eight days from May 28 guided walks and activities will provide an opportunity to explore the region's beautiful and varied scenery.
The festival highlight will be the three-day walk along the Liberty Trail starting on May 31.
This 28-mile trail follows the route that supporters of the Monmouth rebellion may have taken in 1685.
Walkers will be able to travel home by mini bus, or stay overnight on the route.
The varied programme includes a walk around Barwick Park to learn more about the legends behind the follies; a high level ridge trail around the village of Corton Denham; events for nature enthusiasts as well as evening rambles and a visit to one of the UK's largest heronries.
Cllr Sylvia Seal, SSDC's portfolio holder for leisure and culture said: "Walking is a wonderful form of exercise helping us to feel healthy and happy.
"For visitors and local residents alike it can also be a journey of discovery, to explore and feel part of the landscape."
The festival includes events such as Bugtastic! on May 31 when youngsters can join rangers for a minibeast hunt on Ham Hill then return to the education centre to create their own small creatures.
On May 28 there will be sponsored walks on behalf of St Margaret's Somerset Hospice in which over 400 people are expected to take part with walks starting from various locations.
