A NEW footgolf course opened in the South West last week.

On Good Friday, Footgolf Devon welcomed members of the public to the nine hole course.

The course was built by three friends, Stuart Pears, Paul Hawkins and Sam Evans, who have been playing the sport for the past few years.

Stuart, director of the course in Westcott, Cullompton, said: “I believe the game will become more popular and will continue to grow and grow as participation not only builds self-esteem, but will help create a connection with others within the community.

“Footgolf is such a diverse sport and the beauty of this game is that anyone can play. If you can kick a ball you could become a footgolf champion.”

Just like golf, the aim of the game is to get the ball into the hole, but instead of using golf clubs, players kick footballs from tee markers into the holes in as few shots as possible.

Players can play in groups of up to five people and you can choose to play nine holes or 18. The winner is the one who completes the course in the fewest shots.

Paul, director, added: “Having played football all of my youth until I stopped playing at the age of 34, I missed the competitiveness and enjoyment, so I tried footgolf when my brother in law recommended it to me and fell in love with it straight away.

“I have now played around the country in many competitions and even in played in Florida and Tenerife.

“It has been a pleasure to build the course with Stuart and Sam.”
