RUGBY: England call-up for leisure centre manager

A DUTY manager at Crewkerne Leisure Centre has been selected to play for the England Women’s Rugby A team.

Charlotte Male, 19, will be making her debut for the England A team against the New Zealand Women’s Rugby team on November 17 at Esher Rugby Club in Surrey.

Charlotte, who is a prop and plays for Bristol women’s rugby team, had previously played for the England under-twenty squad.

She says that the match at Esher will be a real test of her skills against a formidable New Zealand side.

“I am very excited to be playing but it will be a tough match as the New Zealand team is England’s main rival to win the Women’s Rugby World Cup next year,” she said.

Children will be able to benefit from Charlotte’s expertise in rugby and sport as she will be launching a series of kids sports clubs on Saturday mornings at the Crewkerne Leisure Centre from November 14.

The children will be able to take part in a variety of multi sports events including tag rugby.

Charlotte believes that it is important to encourage youngsters into sport at an early age.

“I started playing rugby as a young girl,” she said. “Women’s rugby is growing in popularity so now is an ideal time to encourage children to come and have fun and enjoy rugby.

“Fitness is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and you are never too young to take up a sport.”

Charlotte’s love of sport and exceptional talent were spotted and developed by Somerset Leisure when she was appointed as duty manager at the Crewkerne Leisure Centre in October after she had been working as a lifeguard earlier this year.

The managing director of Somerset Leisure, Tim Nightingale, said that the organisation is delighted by Charlotte’s England success.

“We are all very impressed by Charlotte’s enthusiasm and talent for sport,” he said. “She has a great future with us and of course with the England team. She will prove to be a great asset and a valuable role model for local youngsters.”
