BUCKLERS Mead Community School in Yeovil joined with the Somerset FA recently to host a free soccer training session as part of the national Kick Racism Out of Football campaign.
Keen young footballers from Bucklers Mead’s feeder primary schools took part in a fun football festival run in partnership with the Somerset FA on the pitches officially opened earlier this term by former Southampton and England player Matt Le Tissier.
This was part of our contribution to a wide range of nationwide events promoting equality in football and in the community.
Ransford King-Davies came to Bucklers Mead to represent the Somerset Racial Equality Council.
Linking with the Somerset FA, Mr King- Davies put together a football session for pupils from Grass Royal and Milford Junior schools.
Prior to the session, he had visited the schools during their assemblies to introduce the project and explain his role within the council in broadening the discussion of racial equality issues.
The football session was well supported and pupils enjoyed coaching, a penalty spot competition and a fully refereed game.
Andy Buse, Bucklers Mead sport centre manager, said: “We are hoping the project will breach any barriers and bring the community closer together by taking skills from the football pitch to their daily lives.
"We hope the scheme will also produce spin-off social benefits to the whole area.”
A school spokesman added: "Projects like this are a key part of the school’s work to increase community cohesion and build bridges between all the members of our local community."
