THE Double Club project which originated at Arsenal Football Club and aims to raise the confidence and ability levels of Key Stage 3 students in core subject areas, through using football themed resources, has started in Yeovil.
These sessions are combined with a parallel programme of football coaching.
The Arsenal Double Club has modules in literacy, numeracy, Science, French, Spanish and German, ICT, Geography, Cookery and Healthy Living, History, Business Studies, Architecture and Citizenship. Most of the modules are aimed at underachieving pupils at Key Stages 2 and 3 but are easily adaptable to suit other needs.
A group of specifically selected Year Eight students at Preston Community School in Yeovil have started a six session pilot programme of literacy.
The first session looked at the use of adverbs and the history of Yeovil Town FC with a particular emphasis on their past exploits as giantkillers in the FA Cup.
This was led by Playing for Success staff and tied in with the FA Cup First Round played over the previous weekend.
The students also worked hard in the football coaching session which was led by Roy O’Brien from Yeovil Town.
The programme has been co-ordinated by Playing for Success scheme in conjunction with the Community Sports Trust at Yeovil Town Football Club.
Helen Perrow, assistant principal at Preston Community School said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students. The students are enjoying the sessions and look forward to it each week.”
Playing for Success programme manager, Simon Lowe said: “The aim of the Double Club pilot is to raise standards of literacy through the medium of football and we are delighted this project has given us the opportunity with our colleagues at the football club.”
