HOCKEY: Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 5, Shepton Mallet Ladies 1

2:00pm Friday 4th December 2009

AFTER two weeks of extreme weather conditions in Sherborne, all things were calm and tranquil at the start of this weeks match. Still undefeated, the home side were looking for their seventh win on the trot.

However a strong and rather speedy Shepton Mallet side stood in the way of this feat.

The saying goes 'you don't play sport on paper' and this was certainly proved the case in the first 15 minutes.

The league leaders saw themselves go 1-0 behind, after what can only be described as the female, hockey playing version of Usain Bolt speed past the home side's defence to open the visitors' account.

This has been a regular feature of the season so far, so YSHC were not fazed by the challenge that stood in front of them.

Some strong excellent defending saw the visitors kept at bay until Becky King was able to equalise with a very cheeky reverse finish. From this point onwards there was only going to be one winner.

The home side upped their game, spurred on by Pearce's excellent attacking play on the right and King was able to grab her second of the match.

Following on, skipper Watson added to her goal tally scoring the team's 3rd goal. Soon after the break, King completed a well deserved hat trick then Barter was able to convert from a short corner.

All in all it was a good day at the office for the Yeovil girls, who next week gather their buckets and spades for a trip to the seaside to play Weston Super Mare.
