HOCKEY: Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 3, Westberries Ladies 2

ON a slightly chilly but bright afternoon at the Gryphon School, Yeovil and Sherborne 1st team ladies were to meet their biggest rivals for the league title, Westberries.

If some big matches are an anticlimax, this one had everything. But lets start at the beginning.

A regular feature of the home team's season has been conceding early goals and this happened once again when Westberries burst through in the first two minutes to open the scoring.

However this seemed only to calm Yeovil and Sherborne. The home team went on the attack. Excellent passing and movement found Pearce in acres of space to slot home the equaliser. Game on.

Both teams were fired up and hard tackles were coming in thick and fast but the ever so constant Yeovil and Sherborne defence were able to fend off Westberries and their fast moving breaks.

Newton, Barter, Aldred and Shayler were all superb for the home team and they needed to be because Westberries were not about to give up on this match. Yeovil and Sherborne were however dominating possession.

Walters ran the show in the centre of midfield, but Troughton and Coles were an excellent supporting cast on the wings, swinging the ball up the flanks to the forwards.

However it was Walters' ball that found Lanfear to make the score 2-1.

Some excellent individual skill by Lanfear created just enough space for the shot and goal. The match at this point was becoming an epic battle for space and possession.

Both teams had balls cleared off the line and both teams' goal keepers made good saves. Harriet White, in goal for Yeovil and Sherborne, was her usual commanding self, dominating the D and keeping the Westberries forwards at bay.

The home team looked to push for a 3rd goal and decisive blow and this finally came from their skipper Watson.

Her outstanding performance was only bettered by her finish for, an excellent lifted drive shot into the corner.

The away team made it tense scoring with 2 minutes to go, but this was always going to be the home sides day.

The game finished 3-2 and Yeovil and Sherborne's push for the title continues.
