YEOVIL Town’s dismal run in the Football League Cup competition was somewhat given a welcome tonic last night against Colchester United from an unexpected source – defender Richard Hinds.

The centre-half bagged two first-half goals to put the Glovers well in command at Huish Park in this First Round tie in the competition now sponsored by Capital One.

He struck in the fourth minute when he swept home after the visitors were unable to deal with a corner and then he powered in a header after connecting with Ed Upson’s corner just before the interval.

Yeovil made sure of the victory in the 79th minute when substitute Keanu Marsh-Brown broke the offside trap and raced in to score past Colchester keeper Mark Cousins.

The victory – Yeovil’s first in the competition since a 1-0 victory at Charlton Athletic in a First Round tie back in 2008 – could have been even more emphatic. Cousins did well to stop another Marsh-Brown effort, while fellow substitute Nathan Ralph hit the crossbar.

It was Yeovil’s 13th League Cup tie since being joining the Football League in the summer of 2003 - and only their fourth win.

Last night’s result was the first time since the 2008-09 season that Yeovil have reached the Second Round of the competition when they lost 5-1 at Middlesbrough. Yeovil’s consolation that night came from a Gavin Tomlin effort on the stroke of half-time which made Hinds’ opener last night the Glovers’ first goal in the competition in nearly five hours and 20 minutes of League Cup action!

Tomlin’s goal four years ago came in front of a 15,651 crowd at the Riverside Stadium, while last night Yeovil’s victory was played in front of a disappointing 1,907 at Huish Park – the lowest attendance for any of the Glovers’ 13 League Cup games to date.
