GLORIOUS sunshine greeted the 167 runners who travelled from all parts of the South West to take part in the first race of Yeovil Town Road Running Club’s Summer 5km Series.
Langport AC’s Edward Knudsen ran a superb race to win in a time of 15m37, holding off the fast finishing Peter Grist of Cardiff AC (15m41), who was perhaps understandably tired after winning the Bournemouth Bay Half Marathon just days earlier.
Taunton AC’s Mark Hopkinson (16m26) finished third, ahead of fourth-placed Bob Goutcher of Plymstock AC (16m36), who was the fastest Male Veteran runner on the night.
Summer 5km Series veteran Gordon Seward of Exeter AC had an excellent run to finish in fifth place overall and first Male Veteran 50 award with his time of 16m49 and Mendip AC’s Tim Attwell took the Junior Male title (18m27). Langport’s Jim Hill won the Male Veteran 60+ prize with his time of 20m14.
In the Ladies race, Laura Parker of Wells City Harriers made an impressive debut over the flat Yeovilton course to take an easy win, finishing in 20th place overall and a time of 17m53, with team mate Jenny Moore (18m39) finishing second.
Rachel Heard of Taunton AC (19m00) emulated club colleague Mark Hopkinson as she took home the prize for third place, and Frances Bond justified the large contingent of Honiton RC runners who made their way to the event as she took home the Veteran Female prize in a time of 20m03.
Aly Sloane of City of Salisbury AC, a former Series winner, finished as the leading Female Veteran 45 in 20m24, and Avon Valley’s Rosemary Barber won the Female Veteran 55 title in 21m43. Megan Edwards of Dorchester AC was the winner of the Junior Female title on the night in 23m16.
The organising Yeovil Town Road Runners were well represented on the night, with the team in green and white being led home by Paul Rose, eighth in 16m58, with Paul Levick hot on his heels in 17m26.
Mike Harvey had a return to form, finishing in 18m16, with team mate Martin Lascelles close behind in 18m24.. Jon Rowe ran well for his 18m37, Andy Margrett just missed the 19minute mark as he crossed the line in 19m03, and Paul Allen made the run in look simple as he finished in 19m10.
There was a return to the Yeovil Team for Rod Appleby (19m19), who did well to hold off the challenge of one of the new breed of Club runners, Scott Quayle, who finished two places behind in 19m21.
Steve House sharpened for London Marathon with a time of 19m53 and Lin Lascelles was leading club lady, finishing in 20m13.
Mark Bartholomew ran well for his time of 20m33 and there was a fierce battle between team mates Steve Sparks (20m56) and Sam Harvey and his new racing tattoo (21m12), both keeping ahead of Dave Boyer (21m30).
Andrew Merrick made an impressive club debut as he finished in 22m16 as he finished ahead of another tussle between Yeovil runners, Andy Windram (22m45) holding off Nigel Moysey (22m48), and Jack Frost (22m51) outsprinted Malcolm Maxted (22m52) to the line.
Jo Whaites was another London-bound Club runner in a rich vein of form (she had had a six-minute personal best at Taunton Half Marathon the previous Sunday) and she ran well again, crossing the line in 23m02.
Flora Brooke (27m15) led home Sandra Hopkins (28m56) and Val Hales (30m48), whilst there was a welcome return to action for Adam Hawkins (35m19). Deb Stanfield and Nicky Adcock (both 37m36) accompanied Axe Valley’s Harry Moore to complete the event.
The next race of the Summer 5km Series takes place on Wednesday, May 13, at 7.15pm opposite the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton.
