IT may only be early January, but Somerset all-rounder Pete Trego is already back in training at the County Ground and has his sights set on silverware in 2016.

Last season, Trego scored almost 900 runs in the County Championship as well as taking 26 wickets – and the 34-year-old says he sees no reason why the latter stages of his career can’t be his most productive. He said: “I had a solid season in 2015 but, as always, I am looking to improve on my performances.

"I have worked hard on my fitness levels and I can see no reason why my mid-30s can't be the strongest part of my career.

"I really want to build on what I did in Championship cricket with the bat and put pressure on to really nail down a place in the top five or six in the batting order, which has been a goal of mine for many years.

“I also want to continue to contribute with the ball, and having finished the one day season quite strongly I want to pick up on that and be really explosive at the top of the order and stamp my mark on one-day cricket.

“The number one dream for 2016 is to win the County Championship, but I’m guessing we have to be realistic so we want at least to be challenging at the halfway stage because we can't win it from bottom place.

"Last season we put ourselves in several tricky positions and we showed a lot of character to finish the season strongly with some wins against tough opposition to keep our heads above water.

“This season, however, it’s about moving on from that and to help us we have signed some quality at the top of the order with Chris Rogers which is a fantastic and will give us stability and, hopefully, allow the middle order to flourish.

"With Marcus, Tom Abell and Rogers as a fantastic top three it will, hopefully, put the opposition bowlers under pressure and allow sloggers like myself later in the innings to make hay.”

The County Championship might be the pinnacle of the domestic game, but Trego admits Somerset must be challenging on all fronts and that their limited overs game also requires some improvement.

He said: “From a team point of view, yes it is about the Championship but, across all three formats, I think we were behind the eight ball last year and we have really got to sort that out.

“The team goal is to win a trophy which it has been for some years now.

"We have deserved it at times, things have not gone our way at key moments, so it's about capitalising on those when they arise but we have got to earn them this season.”
