Specsavers County Championship
Day four
Somerset (230 and 86-1) drew with Warwickshire (413)
SOMERSET clung on for a draw against Warwickshire, as new record holder Marcus Trescothick and captain Tom Abell steered them out of choppy waters to take a share of the points.
Warwickshire had made 413 in their first innings, with Jonathan Trott scoring 175, and Somerset resumed their chase in a precarious position - 94-4 - having lost Dean Elgar, Abell, James Hildreth and Steve Davies on Sunday evening.
But opener Trescothick made history, breaking Harold Gimblett's 64-year record for Somerset centuries, as he chalked up number 50 in reaching 106.
Peter Trego also performed well, making 52, but after Trescothick departed at 208-6 the hosts collapsed to 230 all out - Grant Thornton taking 4-34 on his Championship debut for Warwickshire.
That left them 34 runs short of avoiding a follow-on, which was duly enforced, and Elgar departed for a duck to leave Somerset 1-1 in their second innings with more than 40 overs remaining in the match.
But Trescothick continued from where he'd left off, hitting six fours and a six in his total of 46*, while young skipper Abell did his confidence a world of good after a difficult start to his tenure, with five fours in his 35*.
Somerset collected eight points from the match to Warwickshire's 12, meaning they remain bottom of the Division 1 standings but crucially stay in touch with this week's opponents.
They now face Hampshire, again in Taunton, from May 26-29.
