AS England and South Africa prepare for their IT20 match in Taunton on Friday, hopes are abound that there will be a run feast on a sunny Somerset evening.

The County Ground saw a remarkable 834 runs scored in a 50-over match between Somerset and Nottinghamshire last Tuesday, and the power and quality held by the players taking to the field this week could lead to similar carnage.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the records that could tumble if the batsmen on both sides take a liking to the Westcountry wicket.

Highest team score (County Ground)

This was made back in 2006 when Somerset, led by Cameron White's 53-ball 116, carted local rivals Gloucestershire all over the park on their way to 250-3.

Highest individual score (County Ground)

Chris Gayle holds this record courtesy of his unbeaten 151 against Kent in 2015 (also the fastest century, coming as it did from just 45 balls) though, remarkably, the innings came in a losing cause – Somerset’s 224-7 in that match is the highest score made batting second here.

Highest team score (England)

England’s highest ever T20 score came against Friday’s opponents South Africa, as they scored 230-8 to win a superb 2016 T20 World Cup match by two wickets.

Conversely, South Africa’s highest T20 score of 241-6 was against England in 2009 , when Sajid Mahmood’s four overs went for 61!

Highest individual score (England)

Opener Alex Hales, who is set to play on Friday and scored 47 not out in the victory in the first match of the series, has two of England’s three highest ever T20 individual scores.

No-one has yet surpassed his 116 not out against Sri Lanka in the 2012 T20 World Cup.

Highest individual score (South Africa)

Richard Levi, who played for Somerset in 2012, holds the record for South Africa’s fastest T20 century, which was made from just 45 balls against New Zealand.

Best bowling figures (County Ground)

Of course, it's not all about the batsmen - though the bowlers could be in for a rough ride.

No-one has ever taken a five-fer in a T20 in Taunton, with Yasir Arafat’s 4-5 against Warwickshire in 2013 the best haul yet.

What would be a good score?

It often feels like no score is too high to chase at Taunton, but those looking for a baromoter can note that the average first innings score at the County Ground is 175, which falls to 168 in day/night games such as the upcoming international.
