Specsavers County Championship
Day 1
Yorkshire 42-3 v Somerset 268 all out

SOMERSET bowlers Tim Groenewald and Craig Overton starred with bat and ball to swing the momentum away from Yorkshire on the first day's play in Scarborough.

The visitors - captained by Lewis Gregory after Tom Abell was dropped - fell to 30-3 as the top order misfired, but after a half-century from Adam Hose, Groenewald and Overton brought the fireworks in a last-wicket partnership of 61 - and then combined to reduce Yorkshire's reply to 42-3.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bat first, steadily working their way to 20 before losing three wickets for just 10 runs.

Marcus Trescothick (15) was caught by Peter Handscomb off Tim Bresnan, and youngsters Tim Rouse (1) and Eddie Byrom (9) both fell to Liam Plunkett to leave the away side 30-3.

They were aided by a back injury to Ryan Sidebottom - who was so destructive in last month's meeting at the County Ground - and James Hildreth hit a quick-fire 32 off 29 balls, before falling to Bresnan (caught behind by Andy Hodd) at 67-4.

Adam Hose was finding his form, though, and he hit four 4s in an over off Ben Coad as he looked to build a good partnership with Steve Davies, only for the wicketkeeper to fall for 16 (lbw to Plunkett) at 110-5.

Jim Allenby came and went for 19 (bowled by Coad), but Hose pushed on to secure a half-century off 98 balls before eventually falling to Adil Rashid to leave Somerset 180-7.

Skipper Gregory and Overton took their side to 200 at tea, securing one batting point, before Gregory (21) became Plunkett's fourth victim and Jack Leach (3) was dismissed by Rashid at 207-9.

The last pair in the middle clearly decided to go out in style - Overton finding the boundary with regularity and Groenewald smashing Rashid for 26 off one extraordinary over.

A second batting point secured, Overton finally fell for 35 (bowled by Coad) to end the partnership at 61 runs, Groenewald finishing 41 not out off 29 balls (with two 4s and four 6s).

Yorkshire set off in pursuit of Somerset's 268, but endured a tough start to their own innings, as Overton and Groenewald got back to their day jobs with ball in hand.

Overton claimed the first two wickets, having Adam Lyth (4) caught at slip by Allenby and then Alex Lees (12) snared by Trescothick to leave the hosts 18-2.

Trescothick then took a second, more athletic, catch to dismiss Hanscomb (2) off the bowling of Groenewald to reduce to home side to 21-3.

Harry Brook (16no) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (6no) survived to the end of the day, reaching 42-3 and leaving the match well poised going into the second day.
