Specsavers County Championship - Day 2
Worcestershire 257 v Somerset 337 & 47-0

JOSH Davey and Jamie Overton shared eight wickets on day two of Somerset's County Championship match at Worcestershire's New Road, the visitors taking a 127-run lead into Tuesday.

For Overton, these were his first Championship wickets of 2018, as he bowled with frightening pace and ended with 4-61 from 15 overs.

Somerset had resumed on 324-9 and added 13 before Jack Leach edged Ed Barnard to first slip - meaning the visitors missed out on another batting point by just 13 runs.

Come the Worcestershire reply, they quickly found themselves in trouble as Travis Head pushed forward to Davey and edged to Craig Overton at third slip, and Daryl Mitchell was caught behind off Craig Overton to leave the hosts on 14-2.

Joe Clarke (16) then struck four boundaries but surrendered his wicket in a tame manner when he clipped Davey straight to mid-wicket.

Jamie Overton then made his impact, having Moeen Ali (30) caught behind and trapping Brett D’Oliveira (22) lbw.

Worcestershire continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, with Barnard (29) and debutant Alex Milton (8) both ousted on 120, falling to Davey and Craig Overton, respectively.

Luke Wood salvaged the situation somewhat for the home side, ending unbeaten on 65, while sharing partnerships of 46 with Ross Whiteley and 84 with Dillon Pennington.

Jamie Overton accounted for Whiteley (26) and then the resolute Pennington (37), with his pace deliveries too hot to handle.

Davey finished things off by having Steve Magoffin caught by Azhar Ali, but with 257 runs Worcestershire had at least avoided the follow-on and the first innings deficit was a tolerable 80.

For Somerset, Jamie Overton was well supported by Davey (4-68 off 16.5) and his brother Craig (2-29 off 14).

The visiting openers Marcus Trescothick and Ed Byrom then extended their side's overall advantage to 127 by the close, reaching 47-0 in steady fashion.
