Yeovil Town 0, Queens Park Rangers 1
A valiant display from Yeovil Town was not enough to prevent them slipping to defeat at home to QPR.
The Glovers did their reputation no harm against the league leaders on Saturday, but a second-half Charlie Austin penalty was enough to send the visitors back to London with a win.
Had it not have been for the heroics of Rangers ‘keeper Robert Green Yeovil would be registering their first points on home soil this season.
Instead the result leaves Town languishing 22nd in the Sky Bet Championship having won only one of their opening eight games, with a trip to fellow strugglers Bolton to come this Saturday.
Manager Gary Johnson said: “We tried to take the game to them and we kept the ball.
“We know they're quality players who have been around at this level for a long time so we can go home happy in the fact that we gave more than what we got.”
With star striker Paddy Madden still out injured, Johnson handed a start to on-loan Swindon forward Andy Williams.
Defender Liam Fontaine made his home debut after rejoining the club from Bristol City earlier this month, but the 27-year-old limped off with a hamstring injury ten minutes before half time.
Rangers bad boy Joey Barton was rested by manager Harry Redknapp, much to the amusement of the home fans.
It was the visitors who created the first real opening at a vibrant Huish Park, but winger Matt Phillips sliced his shot wide after being sent through on goal after eight minutes.
From then on Yeovil took the initiative, Green showing his class to deny Joel Grant and Liam Davis.
Williams then blazed over from eight yards after good work down the right from Joseph Edwards.
England international Green was again at his best early in the second-half, flying to his left to brilliantly stop Joseph Ralls’ goal-bound effort.
The Glovers continued to press and it was the turn of Davis to again sting Green’s palms.
Austin then clipped the outside of the Yeovil post, before being wrestled to the ground by Daniel Seaborne just inside the box on 74 minutes.
The former Burnley man stepped up in front of the travelling support and coolly slotted the penalty to the right, sending Wayne Hennessey the wrong way.
James Hayter and Michael Ngoo were brought on as one last throw of the dice, but a crowd of 9,108 left Huish Park yet to see Yeovil score a home goal this season.
Johnson added: "The players will be disappointed because they're competitors.
"You can't forever wrap them in a comfort blanket and say 'unlucky, you did well', you've got to say 'you did well, but we've got to be improving in this area, this area and these situations'.
"That's what we'll do and we'll be relentless in our attitude.
"We'll make sure come the end of the season we're in a position to say what a great season, because it's not our football that's letting us down at the moment."
